Reality in my fiction: how important is it? Lengthy travel, cussing, and bathroom breaks happen in real life. How do you address these mundane occurrences in your writings?

Firstly, thanks for including me in this interview.

I think the reality of such day-to-day things very much depends on the style of a piece of writing. If a writer is trying to achieve a real-time feel, then they would feel the need to include such things as those mentioned. If, as I do, you want a flow that leaves space between the important issues of the story, such things become less important. If there is a gap of hours between scenes then it can be assumed that the characters have taken care of bathroom issues.

Of course there is fun to be had in making someone need to sneeze in the middle of a tense scene where they are hiding from an enemy.

More and more we see fiction being multimedia – a book, a TV show, a PC game, a graphic novel. How do you see the publishing industry evolving to handle this trend? Any plans to take your works in the multimedia realm?

I’m a huge fan of audio books. In fact my main consumption of books takes place in audio form. My first book is currently being recorded by the excellent Terry Self. I’ve listened to the chapters as he’s recorded them and I can’t wait to get them out on to the market. I’m sure people will love his work.

As far as the other platforms are concerned, I am sure if I was approached, I would be very interested in seeing my work in other forms. It’s not something I will move forward with myself as I’m a writer, not a TV producer or game designer, however. I think I’d be happier putting my work into other hands. It takes trust but the relationships I’ve developed so far have been great.

What are the top 3 historical time periods and locations you would like to visit?

As you may have guessed, I’d love to visit Ancient Rome. The idea of seeing a civilisation as sophisticated as our own is intriguing. So much of the morality and law that we hold dear today was born at that time.

Moving to a much more recent time, I have a real soft-spot for the 19th century. In particular the exploration and maritime travel that opened up after the discovery of how to measure longitude. The world became a smaller place and a man could achieve so much more than he ever could before.

Thirdly, I’d kind of like to see what the future holds but it would take a brave person to press that button and step into the unknown.

Who are some of your favorite book villains?

I think the best villains are the ones that sway away from the black and white. The ones with plenty of grey areas. I think a reader likes to feel a little sympathy with the villain and also there is no harm in a hero with a dark side.

Randal Flagg from the Dark Tower series is good example. He is a powerful, almost all-knowing being when we first meet him. However, as the series evolves we learn that he is as much a prisoner to his own fate as anyone else in the books, he just plays his part so well.

I read a lot of historical fiction. I love seeing a writer give sympathetic justification for the actions of traditional villains. Conn Iggulden does this very well. He takes a character like Julius Caesar or Genghis Khan and makes them human and vulnerable.

In my experience, some of the best fiction is based on facts and history. How do you build your research into your fictional works?

While I like to build my stories over a framework of reality and historical fact, I am aware that as I develop the tale I move further into fantasy with each page. I aim to give the reader the broad strokes of the time without getting bogged down with too much historical fact. I am by the nature of writing a zombie apocalypse novel building a world in order to rip it down.

In the same way that I am happy to read a story that mentions a pistol without needing to know the make, model and how many rounds it holds, I don’t feel the need to saturate my stories with historical details.

If you could sit down and have tea (or a beer) with 5 fictional characters, who would you invite to the table?

As I’m sober I think we will stick to tea, thanks. In no particular order I think I will go for:

Druss the Legend from the David Gemmell novels.
Roland Deschain from the Dark Tower novels by Stephen King.
Tiro from Robert Harris’ Imperium trilogy. The best narrative voice I’ve ever read.
Alex from the Clockwork Orange
Finally, if I can include one of my own characters, Otho. I had so much fun writing him that I’d love to meet him.

Five men I notice but that wasn’t deliberate.

What do you do when you are not writing?

I’m a trucker and that takes up a lot of my time. It does give me a lot of audio book time though. I spend most of my free time with my family, that’s the most important part of my life. For down time, I’m a gamer and I like to build and paint model ships.

What is the first book you remember reading on your own?

The Hobbit I think. I do remember my junior school teacher sending a letter home asking if my mum was happy for me to read Lord of the Flies at ten years old. Thankfully she was.

You have to run an obstacle course. Who do you invite along (living or dead, real or fictional)?

I’m a lazy sod at heart. So I’m going to go for Thor. Hopefully he’d be in the mood to carry me.

Finally, what upcoming events and works would you like to share with the readers?

Other than my inclusion in the Undead Worlds Anthology? My first audio book will be out soon, Legion of the Undead.

I’m also close to finishing a new story. A horror based on the real life disappearance of a ship with full crew and passengers aboard. I’ve taken the story and added my own twist, hopefully people will like it. Then I’m back to finishing the Legion of the Undead books with the third and final instalment.

Thanks for the questions, it’s been fun.

Michael Whitehead

Hi, My name’s Michael Whitehead, I’m 43 years old. I live in Mansfield, on the edge of Sherwood Forest in England. I was born in Liverpool but grew up and went to school in Nottingham. I’ve been with my wife for 26 years and we have two sons, Morgan and Lucas. I’m a late starter, I began writing this time last year. I’m one of those people who read a lot and wanted to know if I could turn my hand to writing.

Ladies, gentlemen and anyone who counts themselves as neither. As you may or may not be aware I have the honour of being included in the Reanimated Authors new anthology, Undead Worlds. It is the only place to get a copy of my short story – The Fort. It’s set in the Legion of the Undead world.

Ebook Giveaway & Interview: Michael Peirce, Author of the Red Dirt Zombies Series

Heya folks! Please welcome Michael Peirce, one of the authors of the Undead Worlds anthology. They have pitched in to have a big book giveaway with multiple winners. Audiobooks, signed paperbooks, swag, and ebooks! Yay! Just scroll to the end for the giveaway! And check out the Master Post for more interviews!

The Desert Island Collection: what music makes it into your MP3 player and why?

My theme music, Nightwish ‘Sacrament of Wilderness’ and my own “Encore” which I’d have to update for the event!

Reality in my fiction: how important is it? Lengthy travel, cussing, and bathroom breaks happen in real life. How do you address these mundane occurrences in your writings?

Not very much except in specific instances. In my most recent Red Dirt Zombies release I described how tedious it was having to travel in convoys in war time Georgia.

In a non fic which is a WIP I describe an armored car crew urinating off the side of the vehicle and incurring the wrath of a new guy officer. He shut up when they looked at him like he was an idiot and said simply ‘Mines…’

As to cussing? I’m writing a lot of what is essentially military sci fi but I want readers to see the nobility of the characters I’m creating, at least the good ones. Do soldiers cuss? Yep. But I keep it to a minimum.

The apocalypse is here! Which 4 apocalypse/prepper authors would you want with you in order to survive the first big upheaval?

Well I certainly like and respect a lot of fellow authors and I’m sure most of them are cool. Many are in fact vets. I won’t list them all because I’d surely miss one and then feel like a schmuck.

Honestly though, I’d prefer to have the guys from my old military outfit. They care about my life as I care about theirs, and they would not hesitate. They know how to dance.

What has been your worst or most difficult job? How does it compare to writing?

My most difficult job was fighting a war but it was certainly not the worst. I was at home in the company of soldiers and have written quite a bit about that. Am writing more about it now as we speak, and excerpts can be found on my Facebook page.

As to difficult? I am a natural NCO / project manager and had some fun with that in the security and technology fields. As it become more corporate I began to despise it with a passion. It is almost impossible for me to play that game of ‘corp speak’ and ‘let’s pretend.’ I cussed out my last boss and left that behind me, shaking the dust of my shoes.

Compared to writing? Even when I was a young soldier I was already an experienced writer and while playing at soldier, I watched always thru the eyes of a reporter, so the two flow together in my mind sometimes. I’ve always felt it was my job to document the amazing characters I met doing those things. I did it first for the Soldier of Fortune Magazine and now I’m stretching out and really getting it done in a book.

As to regular jobs? Other than a few specific instances I’d much rather write. I feel like I’m identifying stories, more than writing them and it’s kind of a weird humbling experience. The stories were waiting for me and I have to hurry up and get them out there. I hadn’t done fiction since the nineties so getting back in that game has been a trip.

Do you have any superstitions?

I preferred to wear my lucky baseball cap in combat. I try not to schedule anything important on the 13th but mostly, I’m not really superstitious. I’m just playing the odds!

If everyone came with warning labels, what would yours say?

I was lying when I told that girl in Los Angeles I hunted sharks with a submachine gun! I thought she’d get the Hemingway reference…sigh. Maybe I should have worn a warning label…

I guess the warning label would say, “If you do something particularly goofy or really cool and I see it, it could end up in a book. No offense…”

In the face of an apocalypse, what are the most important things when it comes to personal security?

Depends upon one’s demographic at about ten levels. A mean average say, late twenties healthy male or female, I’m with Neo, “we need guns, lots of guns…” And water. The rest you can figure out.

I’ve lived through the collapse of a country and believe me, you can feel mighty insecure.

I should add that I don’t view any coming apocalypse from the perspective of The Walking Dead, nor does my fiction reflect that. My belief is that people banding together can beat any enemy but my books are about the cost of doing that.

What does your Writer’s Den look like? Neat and tidy or creative mess? Can you write anywhere or do you need to be holed up in your author cave?

My office is my home and it is a disgrace in some ways. The desk is an unfinished door with my cables going in the hole where the doorknob should be. It’s cluttered with computer screens, guitar tuners, notes to myself and bits of unrecognizable debris. There is usually a cat named Felicia sitting in front of my keyboard assuring it’s desperately uncomfortable to type in my blatherings. But it’s home…

To my right is a wall with a white board and a bunch of maps depicting the battle fields in the Georgia Z-War. To my left a synthesizer where I crank out strange melodies after drinking too much absinthe late at night…and of course my sword. Most writers have a sword, I saw that on the internet somewhere.

Side characters can make or break a story. What side characters have you enjoyed in other works? What side characters in your own work have caught more attention than you expected?

I like Lucy in Christopher Artinian’s “Rise of the Rams” and John Holmes has his Irregular Scout Team stories with a Serbian named Zircovic who is quite a hoot. David Simpson’s band of wacky truck drivers certainly fill the bill.

My own Jane Miniver is the Governor’s enforcer, an Irish expat with a punk hairdo and a relentless drive to enforce the Governor’s will. Several male readers have asked me if I based her upon a real woman and if so, could they have her phone number. Nope. If she was real, I’d get her an unlisted number!

I confess I don’t really consider any of my characters ‘side characters’ since I write from the perspective of an ensemble cast and jump back and forth between them. I get kind of attached to them and really hate some of the things that happen to them.

Finally, what upcoming events and works would you like to share with the readers?

I’ve recently released “Red Dirt Zombies III: Once I had a Comrade” and a new short apocalyptic adventure tale called “The Countess Consuela.”

I’m half way through a non fic called “African Days Hollywood Nights” about my adventures in war and music. I hope to start flogging that around the first of the year.

A recently released anthology called “Undead Worlds” includes my “Horror at Roswell Mills” and a PTSD Charity endeavor has my “Section 8.”

And I confess I’m really pleased to say I’m about ten thousand words into my new RDZ novel called “The General’s Daughter” where I’m plowing some new ground structure wise.

Zombie Book Giveaway & Interview: Mark Cusco Ailes, Author of The Z-Day Trilogy

Heya folks! Please welcome Mark Cusco Ailes, one of the authors of the Undead Worlds anthology. They have pitched in to have a big book giveaway with multiple winners. Audiobooks, signed paperbooks, swag, and ebooks! Yay! Just scroll to the end for the giveaway! And check out the Master Post for more interviews!

The apocalypse is here! Which 4 apocalypse/prepper authors would you want with you in order to survive the first big upheaval?

Robert Kirkman, Armand Rosamilia, Mark Tufo and Jay Wilburn (the bad boys of zombie fiction)

The Desert Island Collection: what heavy metal music makes it into your MP3 player and why?

Megadeth, Iron Maiden, Judas Priest, W.A.S.P., Krokus and Don’t Fear the Reaper by Blue Oyster Cult…the song is fitting for a zombie apocalypse.

If you could introduce one of your characters to any character from another book, who would it be and why?

Ray Cycle from my Ray Cycle Dragon Hunter Adventure series would be a perfect addition to my Z-Day series. A dragonslayer battle zombies…do I sense a spinoff series?

If you could, what book or movie or TV series would you like to experience for the first time all over again and why?

Dawn of the Dead and Night of the Living Dead so I can be in awe at the uniqueness of the two films. I watch each of them several times a year going all the back to the eighties.

Are changes in society reflected in contemporary villains and heroes or are there certain traits that never change?

All the typical traits/tropes of a hero and villain change to reflect the current society in all series. That is why villains can be more demented and destructive when a book is rewritten for the modern age or a movie is remade for the theater…since Hollywood has run out of ideas apparently. Let’s reboot the Halloween franchise for a third time!

Your poetry book, A Handful of Raindrops, could be set as a polar opposite to your zombie books. Agree or disagree? Any further poetic works in the making?

I was writing poetry long before I published my first novel. A Handful of Raindrops is my complete collection of all of my poems…the good ones that is. I have no plans to release any more poetry anthologies. They reflect a different timeframe and frame of mind of my life. I’m past that now.

What does your Writer’s Den look like? Neat and tidy or creative mess? Can you write anywhere or do you need to be holed up in your author cave?

I live in a haunted house. My writing studio is filled with horror props from movies (some which I produced), horror memorabilia, and photos of me with some of my celebrity friends including Brinke Stevens, Felissa Rose (Angela Baker from Sleepaway Camp) and my co-stars from the movie Moon 44.

What is the first book you remember reading on your own?

Are we talking Dr. Seuss? Just kidding. It was most likely Stephen King or Clive Barker. I’ve read thousands and thousands of books over the years.

Finally, what upcoming events and works would you like to share with the readers?

I’m almost finished writing the second sci-fi novel in my Invasion Earth series. I will then begin working on the next novel in the Z-Day series. In February, The Stirring starring Brinke Stevens will be released which I was one of the producers of. When my brother (Derek Ailes) and I go on our book tour in 2017 will be bring some props from the movie with us on display.

Ebook & Interview: Jessica Gomez, Author of Infected

Heya folks! Please welcome Jessica Gomez, one of the authors of the Undead Worlds anthology. They have pitched in to have a big book giveaway with multiple winners. If you could be an extra on a TV show or movie, what would it be and what would you be doing?

I always thought it’d be awesome to be a Zombie. It wouldn’t matter what TV show or movie; the makeup would be well worth it.

If you could have a signed copy of any novel what would it be and why?

Romeo & Juliet, by Shakespeare. This was the first book I really enjoyed reading.

The apocalypse is here! Which 4 apocalypse/prepper authors would you want with you in order to survive the first big upheaval?

I don’t think I can only pick 4. I’d have to go with my entire Reanimated Writer crew. We each have a unique take on the Zombie apocalypse that we’d all have a lot to bring to the table.

What makes you cringe?

Gnomes. They’re little devils.

If you could pick a fictional character to officiate at your wedding or renewal vows, who would it be?

I’d go with Daffy Duck. I love the way he talks. I’d have a tough time not laughing during any speeches.

If you could give any literary villain a happy ending who would you chose?

Dracula. His story would be the best to tell. Full of life, death, and hundreds of years of history.

The public library of your dreams has arrived! What special collections does it hold?

I don’t really have one set of books I’m fond of. I enjoy a plethora of books, by different authors. There are a few that I stick to, but I love to read books by new authors.

If you had to choose someone to rescue you from the jaws of certain death would it be a superhero, supernatural creature, or a space alien?

Hmm… The superhero doesn’t interest me much. Never been into them. Supernatural creature and space alien are in a close tie. Both are equally interesting, but one has the tendency to stick probes where the sun done shine. So, that leaves Supernatural creatures by default. Most of the books I’ve read in this genre work out well for the main characters.

Reality in my fiction: how important is it? Does your Forensic Science knowledge come into play?

Reality is my fiction is important, because you should twine truth with fiction to have a great interesting story. Not all the time is it require, but it helps. Take my Flash series for instance. I’ve based some of this story off truths. The cave systems that they live in really do exist in Oregon. The vegetables and fruit they grow are all native to this region, as well as the amount of snow fall they get each year. The best part of the story, is how I came up with the idea in the first place. I was watching one of those dooms day stories, where the world ends, they talked about these systems and how they’d work well for the end of the world scenario. One thing led to another and POOF Zombie apocalypse story.

Conventions, book signings, blogging, etc.: what are some of your favorite aspects of self-promotion and what are some of the least favorite parts of self-promotion?

I don’t have any signings schedules until next year. BUT I have a new Anthology that is out Oct. 10th Undead Worlds. 22 authors, 22 zombie stories, one great book! And book 3 in the Flash series, EVOLVED, is coming out at the end of 2017. The first book, INFECTED is FREE from Oct. 27th to Oct. 31st on Amazon.

My favorite aspect of self-promotion is meeting new people from all over the world. People helping people. It’s been an amazing journey. My least favorite part it TIME! I never have enough time to do everything. I’m one person, doing the work for a dozen. It never ends.

Ebook Giveaway & Interview: Samie Sands, Author of Lockdown

Heya folks! Please welcome Samie Sands, one of the authors of the Undead Worlds anthology.

I would love to have Valerie Lioudis, Shelley Blalock, Jessica Gomez, and Kevin Penelrick with me. I hope they know how to survive better than me…!

The public library of your dreams has arrived! What special collections does it hold?

I would love a library that holds small press and self published books. I do read eBooks, but there’s nothing quite like a paperback, and it would be great for there to be more opportunities to get hold of books that are otherwise only available online.

If you had to choose someone to rescue you from the jaws of certain death would it be a superhero, supernatural creature, or a space alien?

Oh a space alien for sure! That would make a much better story, plus I can also use the opportunity to learn more about

If you could, what book or movie or TV series would you like to experience for the first time all over again and why?

I would love to watch Breaking Bad again without knowing how it will end. That series is on another level of amazing! I can’t believe I put off watching it for so long. At least now, there’s Better Call Saul

What has been your worst or most difficult job? How does it compare to writing?

Most of my work has been creative. I’ve spent most of my time working in design (graphics and fashion) so this is completely different. Both fun though, in their own way!

Who are some of your favorite book villains?

I love Amy from Gone Girl. She’s just so wonderfully crazy, how can you not love that?

From your own writings, are there any characters you would like to cosplay?

Leah, at the end of Lockdown. I can’t really explain why without spoiling the story, but uf you’ve read the book you will know why.

If you could sit down and have dinner with 5 dead authors, who would you invite to the table? What would they order?

Emily Bronte, nearly enough cake and a little wine.
Lewis Carroll, hot tea and ‘eat me’ cakes.
Charles Dickens, gruel.
Herman Melville, hot clam and cod chowder.
JD Salinger, a cheese sandwich and malted milk.

What do you do when you are not writing?

I’m a mom, so a lot of my time is taken up with homework and insane games that I never fully understand! I also play Pokemon Go (Team Instinct, of course!)

What is the first book you remember reading on your own?

I’m not too sure about that, but I remember the first book that really affected me. Noughts and Crosses by Malorie Blackman. The way the plot seems to spiral out of control always gets me, even now when I re-read it.

Paper/Ebook Giveaway & Interview: Justin Robinson, Author of Undead on Arrival

Heya folks! Please welcome Justin Robinson, one of the authors of the Undead Worlds anthology. They have pitched in to have a big book giveaway with multiple winners. What mystery in your own life could be a plot for a book?

I’m originally from Echo Park, which is a neighborhood just to the east of Downtown L.A. While it’s gentrified over the past decade or so, when I was growing up there it was a little tougher. Just to give you an idea, The Shield was partially filmed in Echo Park (especially in the pilot and seasons 2 and 3), and the show was based on Rampart Division, which were our local cops. If that name sounds familiar, it’s because the entire station was shuttered after a massive corruption scandal. Anyway, I used to keep vampire hours on top of everything else. So one night I get home around 3 and find the entire street clogged with cops. They’re surrounding the house two doors down, a big place owned by a local slumlord. The cops are out of their cars and all have guns — pistols and shotguns — leveled at this house. I park, get out of the car, and the cops basically shout me back into the car. One of them heads over and tells me I can’t go home because this neighbor had “maps and bombs and terrorist stuff” in his house. So I left, hung out at Denny’s, and came back in an hour or so. They were all gone. I still don’t know what exactly happened.

The apocalypse is here! Which 4 apocalypse/prepper authors would you want with you in order to survive the first big upheaval?

Whichever ones would taste best when the food runs out.

Is there a genre or literary niche that you feel hasn’t gotten it’s deserved amount of attention?

I have absolutely no idea. I don’t even know how I’d judge.

What’s the most interesting gross fact you know?

When Maximilien Robespierre was sent to the guillotine, he had attempted suicide the previous night. Unfortunately, he’d botched it, and merely shot a section of his jaw off. Although it wasn’t completely off — it was still connected with a strip of flesh. His captors decided he’d die during the night, so just let him be. But when he didn’t, a doctor saw to him. Unfortunately, his jaw couldn’t really be reattached, so the doctor just kind of tied it on with a hanky. When his captors brought him to the guillotine the next day, the executioner decided that the hanky would somehow interfere with the guillotine’s operation and so tore it off Robespierre. Supposedly, the awful sound Robespierre made was only silenced when the guillotine fell.

What decade from the last century would you pick to have been a teenager in?

The ’80s. I’m not living without John Carpenter or Galaga.

What now-dead author would you like to interview? What are some of the things you would chat about?

Dashiell Hammett. And then we’d sit in awkward silence because I would be too self-conscious to say anything.

If you could, what book or movie or TV series would you like to experience for the first time all over again and why?

The director’s cut of Dark City. That way I could never waste my time with the theatrical cut and only have seen the masterpiece.

Millions of generations into the future, you are an alien archaeologist come to Earth to sift through the ancient remains of humanity. What is the oddest thing you find?

Funko pops. They’re clearly religious idols, but mass-produced and made of cheap plastic.

Which ancient or historical works have you not read and periodically kick yourself for not having made time for them yet?

I have the entire run of Grant Morrison’s The Invisibles sitting on my bookcase and I haven’t gotten around to them yet.

What is a recurring or the most memorable geeky argument or debate you have taken part in?

I don’t like Alien 3 or Alien Resurrection and the less said about Prometheus the better. I haven’t seen Alien Covenant, and have no desire to change that. However, the original two graphic novels by Mark Verheiden and Alien: Isolation (yes, a video game) are the perfect continuations of that world, kind of splitting the difference between the horror of the first installment and the action of the second. While I don’t believe in canon (personally, I think it’s a waste of time to argue about what fake things actually happened), my personal Aliens story starts with Alien, goes to Alien: Isolation, then Aliens, then those first two graphic novels. I still have the original printings where the main characters are Hicks and Newt, as opposed Wilks and Billie — the names they were changed to after Alien 3 unceremoniously threw those characters into the trash. If you or anyone else likes Alien 3 or those others, don’t let me stop you. It’s okay to like a movie. But man, I can’t stand those things. I mean, some of them work as comedies, but monster movies? I don’t think so.

Author Justin Robinson

Much like film noir, Justin Robinson was born and raised in Los Angeles. He splits his time between editing comic books, writing prose and wondering what that disgusting smell is. Degrees in Anthropology and History prepared him for unemployment, but an obsession with horror fiction and a laundry list of phobias provided a more attractive option.

If you could be an extra on a TV show or movie, what would it be and what would you be doing?

Z-Nation. I would love to be a zombie on that show. I would have made a great radioactive zombie. Too bad they tape on the other side of the country.

If you could have a signed copy of any novel what would it be and why?

I would love to have a a signed copy of The Voyages of Doctor Dolittle by Hugh Lofting. That was the book that made me fall in love with reading. When I was a kid, I would hop on my bike and ride around to the yard sales in my neighborhood. I found an old copy of the book and it had that kept in someone’s attic smell. I loved that book. I read it so many times that the binding broke, and eventually repairs by a kid wouldn’t fix it anymore. I have spent years trying to find a copy that has the same cover. I know I could just jump on Ebay and buy one, but it wouldn’t be the same. So, I search in thrift stores and yard sales. I know one day I will find another one. If it were signed, I might actually pass out.

The apocalypse is here! Which 4 apocalypse/prepper authors would you want with you in order to survive the first big upheaval?

My husband and I co-wrote Aftershock together, and honestly he is the one person I would want to have by my side if the SHTF. We work really well together, and have a way of filling in the gaps in each other’s skill set. That, and I am head over heels in love with him. I would drag Grivante along. We could figure out a way to motivate everyone together. Plus, he lives in the middle of nowhere with a ton of plants that grow food. So, really it is more about stealing his food. David A. Simpson would be a great asset. Truck drivers know all kinds of helpful things like best routes, and how to live on the road. Plus, he is just a really great guy. So, that helps! And last but definitely not least, I would take R.L. Blalock with us. I would need another woman along for the ride. We have been working closely for months now on the Undead Worlds project and we get along really well. She is meticulous and worried about what ifs, where I am good at winging it and living on the fly. We balance each other really well.

What makes you cringe?

Not much. My best friend has made a 20 plus year attempt to make me cringe, and has yet to succeed. I will get back to you if he ever does. you will probably hear him celebrating all over the world.

We have to talk about that gorilla gram job you had once upon a time. Did that experience help prepare you for being a writer? What is your funniest memory from that job?

Weird jobs come with weird stories. It is nice to be able to pull from those experiences and make them part of my stories. The best part about being a gorilla-gram was the fact that I was anonymous. I would show up at an office with a giant balloon bouquet and dance around like a loon for a minute or two, making someone’s day. It was awesome. Driving away was always the best. At 17, I wasn’t smart enough to remove my mask until I was out of sight. I got a ton of confused looks.

What book should be made into a game (card, PC, board, etc.) and why? Is there a specific character who you would want to play in this game?

I have a prototype for a board game to go with my zombie series. We even played it a few times. Then I looked into the costs of printing a game board and game cards, and my eyes bugged out of my head. So, it went into a box and is hidden somewhere in my house. I would love to revisit it one day, and maybe look into doing just a card game. Aftershock is a multiple POV novel, and has a bunch of characters that have different strengths and weaknesses, so each one would be pretty fun to try to survive with, but if I had to choose just one, it would be Rocky. If you can be the dog, always be the dog.

From your own writings, are there any characters you would like to cosplay?

I would love to dress up as Inspiration. She is a character from my novel The Many Afterlives of John Robert Thompson. She is part angel and part motivational speaker. She may be a minor character in the book, but I love the idea of a motivational speaker who gets you pumped up for your transition to heaven. I think it would be fun to walk around in her very sparkly white shoes for a day.

What does your Writer’s Den look like? Neat and tidy or creative mess? Can you write anywhere or do you need to be holed up in your author cave?

My husband and I are working on the ultimate basement playroom for the kids, but as soon as that is finished, we have plans for a dream office. It will include a sound booth and a green screen along with a quiet area for me to sit and write. Right now, my workplace is the dining room table. I am literally smack dab in the middle of all the noise and chaos of the house. Some days, when I have had enough of all the craziness, I take my laptop with me in the car and head down to the end of Seven Bridges Road. I am blessed to live in an area of natural beauty, and being able to look out over the bay while I write is just what I need some days.

Valerie Lioudis

Valerie has had a great writing year so far. She won the leighgendarium.com flash fiction contest with her short story Reincarnation and used the prizes to publish The Many Afterlives of John Robert Thompson. She has been accepted into 7 anthologies this year. Treasured Chests is an anthology that is being compiled by Marc Moore at Good Morning Zompoc and the proceeds will benefit a breast cancer charity. The 30 day collective ran an anthology contest with the theme The End, and Valerie wrote a story that won. She is working hard with The Reanimated Writers, not only to do weekly interviews with zombie fiction authors, but also spearheading the Reanimated Writers Undead World Anthology that will be released this fall with the works off 22 zombie fiction authors. She is also creating an anthology Mad Like Me that will benefit Vets with PTSD. That one is shaping up to be quite a read. All this, and finishing up Aftershock book 2 with her husband Kristopher.

Audiobook Giveaway & Interview: Grivante, Author of The Zee Brothers Series

Heya folks! Please welcome Grivante, one of the authors of the Undead Worlds anthology (here’s the master post with links to all the interviews). I quite enjoyed his short audiobook The Zee Brothers: Revenge of the Zombie Yeti (which is currently still free to listen to on the author’s YouTube station) and his other audiobook The Zee Brothers: Curse of the Zombie Omelet, so it’s quite a treat to have him on the blog for an interview.

Make sure you check out the big book giveaway with multiple winners. Audiobooks, signed paperbooks, swag, and ebooks! Yay! Just scroll to the end for that.

What’s the most interesting gross fact you know?

I don’t know the exact percentage, but the FDA allows a certain percentage of bugs in our food. My wife was once on a boat preparing to leave port. It was transporting wheat to somewhere else. They had the top of the container open and she said she could see the wheat moving, like waves, then they filled it with some sort of chemical and the moving stopped.

If you had to choose someone to rescue you from the jaws of certain death would it be a superhero, supernatural creature, or a space alien?

Superhero. It would be so awesome to be picked up and flown away by Superman or some other superhero.

How does modern pop culture influence your work?

In lots of ways. The fast paced mayhem of shows like American Gods, Preacher, Z Nation and Blood Drive all have shown me that my kind of insanity is alive and well in this world. I also find that the fact that there are so many zombie shows out there now, that in my zombie books, you can’t pretend like no one knows about zombies. You have to show that your characters are aware of zombie pop culture. The time of no one being able to name them as zombies because they’ve never heard of them before has long since passed.

Do modern cultural references date a piece or add touchstones for the reader?

They do both. It all depends on the reader. Making use of or mentioning certain slang words, songs, popular shows and even political references can impact the feel of a story. For some, it could be from a phase of their life where they outgrew something and it feels like ancient history, for others, it could be remembering the time of their life and be a touchstone to better times.

What has been your worst or most difficult job?

So far, I look back and I see how much every job has taught me and I can’t say I’ve had a bad or difficult job. There are times when some are hard work or exhausting, but none have been what I consider difficult or the worst. Now, some have been boring, like working in a movie theater as a kid. It sounds glamorous to a teenager, visions of watching all the movies you want and consuming all the popcorn and soda you could possibly imagine pass through your head, and there is some of that, a small amount. The rest of the time though, it’s sweeping popcorn down aisles, picking up other people’s trash, taking tickets and repeating the same information to person after person. It gets old in a hurry.

How does it compare to writing?

Sometimes writing feels like all you are doing is cleaning up someone’s mess. Except instead of someone else’s spilled popcorn, you’re cleaning up your own.

In this age of publishing, self-promotion is really necessary for the author. What do you enjoy most about advertising yourself and your works? What do you find most challenging?

The thing I enjoy most is the people I am meeting and working with. It’s a lonely road at times and having others that support you or at least get your struggle is a blessing. The most challenging is just getting people to give you the time of day. We’re all swamped, very few people read anymore, so shouting from the rooftops “Hey, check out my book!” feels exhausting and without impact at times.

What were you like as a kid?

I loved hard rock and read a lot of comic books. I played outdoors and created adventures with my friends. We always daydreamed our way out of boredom, but often into trouble as well. I never quite felt like I fit in, but I think that is true of all of us. We’re all so vastly different and unique, it’s tough to find people that live down the street that share the same kinds of interests and hobbies as we do.

Did your kid-self see you being a writer?

Yes, definitely. I loved reading at an early age and devoured books. I wanted to create the same kind of magic for others that had been created for me. It’s like when you give the perfect gift to someone for their birthday or Christmas.

The Desert Island Collection: what comics/graphic novels make it into your trunk and why?

At one point in time I had a warehouse full of comics. Now I only have 1 small short box of comics. That’s all I decided I needed to hang onto. In part, because anything made after 1990 and much of it that came before can be re-acquired at anytime from multiple sources. However, If I end up on a desert island, I guess I’d want that small box full. It contains a strange collection. Elfquest, Poison Elves, 1980’s Moon Night, DC’s Vigilante Series, Fish Police, Deadworld, Mage, Grendel and a handful of weird indies. I also have laying around the house at any given time a host of graphic novels of more modern comics, The Walking Dead, Saga, Paper Girls, Stray Bullets, Preacher & more.

Care to share an awkward fangirl/fanboy moment, either one where someone was gushing over your work…..or one where you were gushing over another author’s work?

I didn’t gush, but I dug the first time I met Matt Wagner, comic creator behind Mage and Grendel.

What is a recurring or the most memorable geeky argument or debate you have taken part in?

As much as I love zombies, I generally don’t care for fast zombies. I’ve been swayed to believe that they are feasible, but if they were real, like in the World War Z movie. I’m sorry, but we’d be extinct. End of story and where’s the fun in that?

Finally, what upcoming events and works would you like to share with the readers?

Depending on when this interview will release:

Spokane Zombie Con is coming 10/7/17.

Undead Worlds Anthology releases 10/10/17 (Contains Zombie Exterminators Origin Story).

The Zee Brothers Box Set Vol.1 & 2 releases 10/31/17.

I’ll also have a new mini-comic release sometime between now and the end of the year. It is separate from, but takes place in the world of my series, The Zee Brothers and deals with the villain they battle in the final couple of books. She’s an evil scientist and the comic takes us through one of her diabolical experiments. It’ll be called The Zee Brothers: Zombie Buffet.

About the Author Grivante

Author Grivante as a Zombie

Sometimes I plot things out, but usually to start, I just start writing and see what happens. What the heck is a zombie omelet? I didn’t know either, until I started writing The Zee Brothers!

My characters tend to banter like eighties super-heroes, a sign of my childhood influence of comic books.

I tend to look for humor even when writing on a serious subject. Did someone just lose their arm? Perhaps we can use it as a weapon on the next page or maybe we try and put it back on because one of the characters once played a doctor during sexy time roll play!

Yes, sometimes its absurd humor, but if it gets you laughing, then I’ve done my job!

My stories are often influenced by my real life events. The old axiom, “Write what you know” manifests to fill the pages.

Big Zombie Book Giveaway & Interview: Derek Ailes, Author of The Undead Pool

Heya folks! Author Derek Ailes is here to chat with us about his zombie fascination. He is one of several of the authors of the Undead Worlds anthology. They have pitched in to have a big book giveaway with multiple winners. Audiobooks, signed paperbooks, swag, and ebooks! Yay! Scroll to the end for the GIVEAWAY!

If you could be an extra on a TV show or movie, what would it be and what would you be doing?

Orville – I’d play an alien. The Walking Dead – I’d play an character that dies in his first episode.

If you could pick a fictional character to officiate at your wedding or renewal vows, who would it be?

Jason Voohrees – I see Kane Hodder (Jason in 7-10) two to three times a year. I’m sure he’d be happy to officiate the wedding…that is if I’m stupid enough to settle down.

The public library of your dreams has arrived! What special collections does it hold?

Every horror novel ever written from the dawn of time until now. More horror novels are out of print than any other genre.

Are minions/sidekicks just throwaway devices in a tale? Can they become more? Do they need to become more?

The Undead Pool series is a parody of all the comic book characters and every character has his/her sidekick. I use some of them as throwaway characters (I mean to kill off). A couple of them already became main characters in the second book of the series.

Satire in my fiction: how important is it? What attracts you to writing in this genre?

I’ve always had a warped sense of humor. With my roots in the comedy world, it was only a matter of time before I was writing comedic horror stories.

You’re granted a super power and given the chance to team up with 4 other superheroes (or supervillains). What power do you have and who have you teamed up with?

I would possess the healing powers of Deadpool along with his fighting abilities. I would team up with Batman, Superman and Wonder Woman. I would have to team up with Aquaman so I had someone to make fun of.

If everyone came with warning labels, what would yours say?

Caution contents under pressure.

What is a recurring or the most memorable geeky argument or debate you have taken part in?

Which is better DC or Marvel? My answering that question with that question, I may have started a major war.

Big Book Giveaway & Interview: Arthur Mongelli, Author of Harvest of Ruin

Heya folks! Author Arthur Mongelli is here to chat with us about his zombie fascination. He is one of several of the authors of the Undead Worlds anthology. They have pitched in to have a big book giveaway with multiple winners. Audiobooks, signed paperbooks, swag, and ebooks! Yay! Scroll to the end for the GIVEAWAY!

The apocalypse is here! Which 4 apocalypse/prepper authors would you want with you in order to survive the first big upheaval?

On the prepper side I would go with Jim Cobb (Prepper’s Long-Term Survival Guide) and Leda Meredith (Northeast Foraging). Both of these authors could help me survive for a long, long time. On the apocalypse side, I’d go with good old Michael Peirce (Red Dirt Zombies) and Tim Ricketts (Release the Hounds). I know both of those men would be an asset if things got heavy.

If you could give any literary villain a happy ending who would you chose?

Frankenstein’s monster I’d say, truly a tragic ending.

What has been your worst or most difficult job? How does it compare to writing?

I’ve worked a wide variety of jobs, but it was the office job that nearly killed me. I was an on-call director 24/7/365, meaning that there was no time off, not on vacation, not on holidays. There was little oversight, no support and total accountability. My blood pressure was dangerously high. It returned to normal once I was laid off and started working with my hands.

Writing, to me, is more along the lines of some elements of construction; You frame it out (outline), hang the sheetrock (rough draft), spackle a few times (revisions), sand it (Edit) and paint it (Proofread). Although, at least with writing you own it when all is said and done.

Do you have any phobias?

Heights.

What does your Writer’s Den look like? Neat and tidy or creative mess? Can you write anywhere or do you need to be holed up in your author cave?

My office space is my man-cave of sorts. I turned half of a two-car garage into a workshop, the other half into my office. In it are 60,000 comic books, 1,000 movies and a few hundred books. I’ve got my desktop computer in there, although I usually write on a laptop as I can take it to bed if I need more time to write. I try to be aware of the thin line between collector and hoarder, therefore, the space is very organized, everything is sorted alphanumerically and tidily stored away. I could pretty much write anywhere, as long as I am not being continually asked questions, which is quite hard when you have a three-year-old.

If you could sit down and have dinner with 5 dead (zombified?) authors, who would you invite to the table? What would they order?

First would be George A. Romero. Seeing Dawn of the Dead around 1984 as a 7 or 8 year old kid both scarred me and started my obsession with zombies. He would order brains!

Second would be Harry Harrison. I read about 30 or 40 of Mr. Harrison’s books in my adolescence and teenage years. He’d order the Soylent Green.

Third would be H.P. Lovecraft. Despite embracing horrible contemporary social philosophies, he did invent a fantastic horror mythos. He would probably order a turkey dinner with all the fixings and wash it down with a cup of coffee.

Fourth would be William Godwin. He, to my knowledge, was the first author to pen a thriller. Based on his political leanings I think that he would order bread.

Fifth would be Franz Kafka, the godfather of the dystopia. Being a vegetarian, he would order a pasta dish and a salad.

Cover art can be so important for a book, making or breaking sales. What cover art has caught your eye, that you found stood above other books?

Really, there are so many amazing ones I see on a daily basis. I’d say the most striking I’ve seen recently is on Case Maynard’s The Surrendered series. Something about those covers just really catches my eye.

You have to run an obstacle course. Who do you invite along (living or dead, real or fictional)?

The mythological Thor. In the Lokrur he drank so deeply of the ocean in a drinking contest that he caused the tides, nearly won a wrestling match against old age, and nearly wrestled Jormungandr from the depths of the ocean. Everything else was within his ability.

Finally, what upcoming events and works would you like to share with the readers?

The sequel to Harvest of Ruin, entitled Harvest of Ruin: The Dead of Winter was released on September 4th of this year.

I have a zombie story, Jimmy, that ties into the Harvest of Ruin world. It is included in Reanimated Writers Undead Worlds anthology which released on October 9th.

Another story entitled The Phillips House will appear in Mad Like Me anthology with the release date of September 2017.

I will have a table at the Walker Stalker Convention in Edison, NJ on December 8th and 10th. If you are going to be there, please stop by and chat.
