BOOK BLURB

Ex-Rider Keiko “Kei” Springs was living with her adopted daughter Becky away from her previous life of crime.

Unfortunately, the past is not easy to escape and her sadistic former sensei, Snake, gives her an ultimatum: perform eight tasks for him or die. The final mission before her freedom is nearly impossible, though. Snake wants her to take down a luxury resort where the super-rich are implanted with their heart’s desires, only to be brainwashed into serial killers for blackmail potential.

Teaming up with the eccentric techjack Paradise, her on-again off-again lover Case, and a Judicial Magistrate named Parvati Rao—Kei thinks she can pull it off.

Unfortunately, that’s before she discovers the luxury resort is owned and operated by a nearly omnipotent AI that has it out for her.

MY REVIEW

Revenge of the Cyber Dragons is a decent follow up to Book 1, Daughter of the Cyber Dragons, tho I liked Book 1 a bit more. Kei has tried to go legit but her nemesis, Snake, sauntered back into her life and made demands and threats. Since she has taken a teen ward under her guardianship, she’s vulnerable to these pressure points and takes up the tasks Snake has set before her.

As much as I like Kei’s dark humor and mood, I did miss her banter with the bubbly and dangerous Paradise. But don’t worry! Paradise eventually joins the fray! The pace of the book picks up once she shows up. There’s also Case (who you’ll recognize from the Agent G books). He’s kind of the deadly yet patient quiet cheerleader for some of the characters. A good word to describe him in these books is ‘nurturing’. Which gives me a little giggle because he’s an assassin.

Anyway lots of snark, banter, action, & pop culture references ensue. There’s conflicting motivations and desires among our band of friends. Not everyone will be happy with the outcome. Kei has to wrestle with thoughts of a long lost relative and a bit more than just thoughts. The story did surprise me with the loss of some side or minor characters. One of our heroes was strongly affected by this loss. But serious moments like that act as counterweight to all the banter.

Even as the main story wraps up, there is a lengthy epilogue told through the eyes of another character. This bit answered some leftover questions and perhaps even set us up for a third story in this series (fingers crossed!). All together, it was a good distraction from my humdrum life. 4.5/5 stars.

The Narration: Catherine Ho is a really good match for Kei, who has a darker mood all the time. But I also like how effortlessly she can switch from Kei to bubbly Paradise. Her pacing was really good and I love how she delivered the humor as timing can really add to the banter. Then we get to the epilogue, which is told from a different character’s point of view, complete with accent. Ho does a good job with that voice but I noticed her transitions between characters in the epilogue wasn’t as smooth and sometimes was indistinct. So I had to pay more attention to figure out who was talking. 4.5/5 stars.

BOOK BLURB

Keiko “Kei” Springs is a Rider, a specialized form of delivery girl and mercenary all in one.

They are among the most highly prized criminals in the dystopian neon city of New Los Angeles. Kei has been running from her past for years and has literally erased it from her mind using a popular street drug called lethe. Unfortunately, you can’t outrun your past forever, even on her specialized Nina cybercycle.

Strapped for cash, Kei accepts a job she probably shouldn’t after barely surviving a live fire test by a married pair of oligarchs. Teamed up with a group of other mercenaries and cyborgs, Kei is to seek out a stolen computer program that has the power to drive otherwise ordinary individuals to shocking acts of violence. Her team includes her ex, a handsome bioroid assassin, a teenage hacker, and a ruthless corporate exec that all have their own agendas. It’d be the worst time of her life if not for all the ones she can’t remember.

The Cyber Dragons trilogy is set in the same world as the Agent G series and is an exciting action adventure cyberpunk thriller with plenty of humor.

REVIEW

Note: It’s not necessary to have read the Agent G books to enjoy this book.

Kei and Paradise are an unlikely teamup but they sure do make the chapters fly! I loved the banter between these two. Kei is so serious, so steeped in her self-recrimination and dark thoughts. Paradise is happy to be here, kicking butt and cheering on sex workers wherever she finds them. Then we get Case and Luchita, who I already know from the Agent G books. Case has long been one of my favorite characters in the larger world of Phipps stories. His cyber enhancements sometimes make his personality a bit inhuman, but he has these great moments of support and insight for his teammates.

The pacing is really good as you never get bored but you also feel like the characters get to develop continually throughout the story. I also like the bouts of banter and pop culture references. This book made me nostalgic for Blade Runner. And I also like the challenge of trying to guess them all, tho I admit my knowledge of music isn’t great at all.

Then there’s the plot which snuck it’s way into the opening chapters with a fun ruse. Paradise and Kei meet in a unique way and the crazy ride starts from there. While things look straight forward for our team, don’t worry! There will be some deceit to keep us all interested in the wrap up.

The drug lethe was a curious little bit as Kei sure does spend a lot of time being hard on herself for someone who has worked so hard to forget just what she’s being hard on herself for. I like how she’s a bundle of little contradictions like there. I also like that this story doesn’t let her, or anyone else really, off the hook. There are consequences for actions, whether you remember them or not.

Snake! Kei’s memories of this sensei butthead are tossed in here and there and they add a certain intensity to her character. He took her on as an orphan and trained her in martial arts, killing, and manners. He also forcibly upgraded parts of her with cybernetics. Kei eventually managed to walk away from him and she seems to have embraced her body the way it is, finally.

And all of this comes together for the final big standoff at the end of the story. Will our heroes be maimed permanently? Will some die? Will newly forged friendships be ruined, or reinforced? I love that there’s a kid to rescue. It always seems to bring out the best in our reluctant heroes. It’s another win from this writing duo! And I can’t wait for book 2! 5/5 stars.

Audiobook Narration: Catherine Ho was great as Kei. She had the all too serious snark down and the darker thoughts along with the command voice to get her team moving. Since I’ve listened to the Agent G books, I already had that voice in my head for Case, but Ho did a decent job of creating a believable voice for him here. I LOVED her exuberant voice for Paradise. Her pacing was good and flexible, as the story demanded. Her delivery of the snark and jokes and pop culture references were spot on. 5/5 stars.

Book Blurb

Charles Morgan is small operator in the vast computer technology industry, but he has big ambitions. He borrows heavily from the Mafia to finance his dreams of becoming a big player, but when he fails to make the expected profit, they are quick to demand their money back. Desperate to save his own skin, he hatches a plan that will cripple the competition and propel his new product into the ranks of market leader.

Bryony Elliot is a brilliant but naive British student who has the skills he needs to bring his plans to fruition, but she is refusing to cooperate. With time running out and his creditors’ threats becoming increasingly vicious, Morgan gives up on persuasion and employs deceit instead.

Unaware of the true situation, Bryony launches a catastrophic virus attack on society. When she discovers that she has been used, she frantically attempts to stop the carnage she has wrought, but she is up against violent men who are intent on stopping her. Bryony must dig deep into her mental reserves to stay alive and reverse the damage, but first she must conquer the fears and demons that rule her life. For Bryony has dark secrets of her own….

My Review

Note: Even though this is Book 2, it works fine as a stand alone novel.

Nick Sullivan is an adrenaline junky. He fell into this life in the previous book but loves the action and danger. In his own head, he is the hero but it’s the rush that motivates him, not any quest for justice. I don’t really like Nick but he is a bit more interesting in this book than he was in Book 1, Fallout.

Meanwhile, Bryony (a computer genius) is an animal rights activist. Nick is assigned to keep an eye on her. There’s also Charles Morgan who wants to use her, well her computer skills, to get the Mafia off his back. Nick and Charles instantly dislike one another, and that will turn into despising one another later on.

I really wanted to like Bryony. On the surface, she looks like a strong character (in many regards) – PhD computer student (focusing on computer viruses) and a very active and daring animal rights activist. But I found her pretty whiny throughout the story. She often stamps her foot in frustration. Her stubbornness is her most endearing trait. In many scenes she acts more like a 15 year old than a PhD student.

Then we have Nick. He isn’t good with women at the best of times. Often he’s condescending and enjoys mansplaining things. And, indeed, he is this way with Bryony. While I understand that Nick is written as a self-centered adrenaline junky, I still found his dismissive nature towards Bryony annoying. I need to like one of the main characters and for this book, I didn’t like either of them. Meanwhile, there are few other women in the book, all with minor roles. Annalise (Nick’s new girlfriend) has a small role as well… and I think she would have something to say about Nick’s relationship with Bryony. Once again, the ladies are sexualized in one way or another, instead of standing on their other traits.

I did like the main plot, which involves this crippling computer virus. Bryony is vital to the plot (yay!) but she needs rescuing, reassuring, bedding, and having the raw truth of the situation explained to her again and again. Much of this would have been OK if she was in her teens, but she’s supposed to be an adult with some life experience under her belt. I did like how her phobia was written into the story, why it’s integral to the plot, and how she grows from the experience. I didn’t like how Nick is the one to mainsplain it to her, more than once.

The pacing is good. Plenty of action and I liked the betrayal. 3.5/5 stars.

The Narration: Craig Bowles once again voices Nick Sullivan and he’s a perfect match for his voice. Bowles had distinct voices for all the characters and his female voice (which he uses for all the ladies) sounds feminine. One thing that niggled was the consistent mispronunciation of Heckler and Koch. This gun company has the correct pronunciation under their FAQ section. The correct English pronunciation, according to the company, is ‘coke’. The pacing was good and there were no tech issues with the recording. 4/5 stars.

I received a free copy of this book. My opinions are 100% my own.

Sex. Drones. Rock and roll.

Aidan Headly never wanted to be the man giving orders. That’s fine with the Democratic State Force base he’s been assigned to command: they don’t like to take orders. Nicknamed the Wildcards, they used to be the most effective base against the seven Corporations owning the former United States in a war that has lasted over half a century. Now the Wildcards are known for creative insubordination, chaos, and commanders begging to be reassigned.

Aidan is their last chance. If he can pull off his assignment as Commander and yank his ragtag crew of dreamers and fighters together, maybe they can get back to doing what they came to do: fighting for a country worth living in.

Life’s a bitch. She deals off the bottom of the deck. But you play the hands you’re given.

O.E. Tearmann lives in the shadow of the Rocky Mountains, in what may become the Co-Wy Grid. They share the house with a brat in fur, a husband and a great many books. Their search engine history may garner them a call from the FBI one day. When they’re not living on base 1407 they advocate for a more equitable society and more sustainable agricultural practices, participate in sundry geekdom and do their best to walk their characters’ talk.

This wasn’t the book I was expecting but it was still pretty darn good. Set in 2155 in Colorado, the US is no more. Rather, the country has been divvied up among several large corporations. If you aren’t a corp, then you’re on the outside. Maybe you work in secret some place or perhaps you are with whatever military organization Aidan and his ragtag crew are part of. (It’s the Defense State Force but I have to look at the book description to figure that out as it’s not really mentioned or described well in the story).

So there’s these outposts and one particular outpost holds personnel that have issues with authority. The Wild Cards were once a cohesive unit that got stuff done but since loosing Taylor, their commanding officer, they have been a source of trouble to middle management. Now Aidan has been assigned there as his first command.

These outposts are in place to do several things – gather info, help move people quietly across Corporate borders, and steal all sorts of supplies from the corporations. There lots of drones and self-driving vehicles, wicked coding, and fun tech to keep our heroes under the radar. I see that this book has been labeled cyberpunk but there’s not really any of that going on. No VR at all.

This tale has a great mix of character growth, action, and near-future tech. I really liked Aidan and Kevin McIllian. Tho it was sometimes a little unbelievable that everyone but Kevin had small vocabularies. Sometimes Kevin would use words that have fallen out of common use in this 2155 corporation run USA (like sovereignty and lexicon). Other times, I found it unbelievable that his team mates wouldn’t know certain words (like retention). Still, Kevin is a fun character and I did love the way he talked and geeked out about old classic movies (liked Shrek).

Everyone at this outpost seems to have a secret, which made the team building even more interesting. Aidan is trans (which we know from the beginning). Kevin is hiding his heritage. Aidan has his hands full trying to win over these Wild Cards. I really enjoyed the give and take, the mistakes made on all sides and the efforts to recover from those mistakes. I’m not one for romance, but I couldn’t help but cheer for Aidan and Kevin as they bumbled through their courtship. The sex scenes were nicely done being tasteful and caring.

Later in the story, we do learn a bit more about the corporations and what happened to the USA. In walks Billy and Tweak who provide reasons for the plot to explore this aspect a bit. Tweak was both endearing and frustrating. I totally felt why Aidan wanted to strangle this brilliant, scarred brat. It was brilliant how Aidan and Kevin eventually win her over, bit by bit. And I thought Aidan had a hard time wining over Lazarus earlier in the book!

Some of the scifi aspects were well done – like the drones. But I had questions about other things – like why isn’t there a better way for Aidan to get his testosterone? We have 5 year slow release hormone birth control implants for women now. So why not something similar for testosterone in 2155? There were other areas where I thought the story would have benefited from some near-future scifi tech.

All together, it was a gripping story even with all the unanswered questions about the background (how did we get to this point & exactly what is this military group?). The character growth was the best part of the story. I would place this book in near-future scifi, military, LGBTQ+ genres. 4/5 stars.

The Narration: Kirt Graves gave a great performance on the narration for this story. In fact, I was listening when my husband came to bed and after a minute or two, he asked if the audiobook was multicast. He was surprised when I told him it was all just one guy. He was impressed with Graves’s female character voices, as was I. He had unique voices for all the characters and regional accents, including a Hispanic accent for one border crossing character. His stutter for Tweak was also well done. The pacing was perfect & there were technical issues with this recording. 5/5 stars.

I received this audiobook in exchange for an honest review. The gifting of this audiobook did not affect my opinion of it.

Do you have a pen name? If so, why?
OW: We do! In fact, O.E. Tearmann is actually two authors in a trench coat. Olivia W. and Nonir A. write together, but we decided on a singular pen name for three reasons:
1) there’s an unpleasant cachet about co-authoring we wanted to avoid
2) we write very queer positive works, and there are elements of society who don’t like that. We prefer not to get hate mail in our personal accounts
3) The name itself is meaningful for us. The name’s comprised of part of each of our names, and the word Tearmann is the Irish word for a safe place in a storm. Since we met when studying the Irish language, this was a perfect symbol for us.
Below you’ll see answers from us both.

What was the defining event that made you start writing?
OW: Well, bloody 2016 made me decide to start bugging Nonir about getting serious on this series. Both of us felt like we needed to do something meaningful in the face of all the despair during that year, but neither one of us is a political animal. So we decided to really get to work on a piece set in the version of America we thought this mess could lead to. And then we decided to showcase a multi-ethnic, diverse, inclusive found family that was still finding hope and joy in that terrible setting. We took everything to the darkest place we could. And then we got to work showcasing that you can still make it better.

NA: Writing in general? I was bored in class in middle school and my friend at the time encouraged me to write down the ideas in my head. I’ve actually been writing since then, but Liv’s got the gist of why we started Aces High, Jokers Wild.

What other writing have you done?
OW: I write illustrated books on the intersection between folklore and plants under my own name. I currently have two out; Roots is an illustrated exploration of plants in Old Irish myth and law, and Smoke and Roses is an illustrated guide to the history of the Victorian Language of Flowers and how many of the exotic plants in our gardens came to be there. Nonir and I learned to write together by working on the free webcomic Parmeshen, where I act as the artist. It’s still our weird queer fantasy-steampunk baby.
I also write some short stories and may(!) one day get an urban fantasy book together based on a young lady who’s been kicking around my head for a while.

NA: I write all the things. I have three published short stories under the name Emily Kay Singer, a book of prose and poetry about the Norse god Loki, and a ton of fanfiction. At the moment, I’m working on a solo novel set in the same world as our webcomic.

What makes your writing unique compared to others in the genre?
OW: I’d say what makes our work unique is the hope. You don’t see a lot of quiet, clear eyed hope out there. That’s what we write: the kind of quiet hope that says ‘okay, I’ll try again tomorrow’. We also stress compassion in our work, and creating characters who still reach for their better nature in spite of difficult surroundings has been something we’ve tried hard to do.

NA: Oh, definitely. We also strive really hard to represent diversity and write a variety of characters without making our story about diversity. It’s a hard balance to maintain, but I like to think we do it pretty well.

What’s the basic plot of your book or series?
The arc of the series follows a unit in the resistance force of 2155 America as they fight to build a better life and dismantle the Corporations that own the country. Currently two books are published with the third due on August 6. Book 1 revolves around the way young Commander Aidan Headly pulls one of the best units in the Force back together after a disaster. Book 2 explores the way they pull together to manage the first big win of the war, and the third book is going to explore another big mission, and what it costs.

Have you used any real events or places as inspiration for your writing?
OW: Oh yes! The Aces High, Jokers Wild series is set in Colorado, and we take liberally from our home town setting. We have a lot of fun imagining what places in the area could evolve into in our universe. And Denver offers a lot of great cyberpunk names already: Commerce City, the Tech Center, and the Colosseum, for instance.

Do you have another job outside of writing?
OW: I own a small landscaping business here in Denver, and sell my garden-related art and writing through that.

NA: I do social media marketing for a cancer awareness campaign and run my own business, Wandering Jotun Crafts, which is dedicated to uplifting marginalized communities through art and spiritual services.

What song would you choose as the theme song of your book?
OW: The theme song is Bon Jovi’s ‘No Apologies’, which tells you an awful lot about our characters and us!

What music do you listen to when writing?
OW: it really depends on the project. For this one it’s a blend of Bon Jovi, Flobots, Mischief Brew, Social Distortion, Billie Joel and general fierce classic rock intersecting with 90s punk. For my artwork, it’s usually audiobooks intermixed with Irish folk. For the comic, audiobooks with a lot of middle eastern folk, some Irish folk and Romani music.

NA: I’m a huge fan of listening to movie or game soundtracks. I have a playlist that’s a bunch of my favorites (How to Train Your Dragon, Howl’s Moving Castle, Spirited Away, etc), but most recently I’ve been listening to the Final Fantasy XV soundtrack because it gives me Feels.

What are you working on now?
OW: AHHAHAHHAHA quiets my own hysterical laughter we’re working on the next book in the series. We’ve got a book signing and two conventions coming up, and we’ve both got day jobs. On my own account I’m planting gardens, drawing Parmeshen, writing a book on ancient Irish poetry and another one on the history of weeds in America. Oh, and writing reviews for books and comics. Whew…

NA: Yep. Working on more Aces High, but I’m also working on a solo novel set in the Parmeshen world, as I mentioned before, and I’m writing for a visual novel/dating sim project a friend is running. I’d like to get some short stories out soon, too!

List some great books you have recently read:
OW: I’ve been on a reading kick lately, so I’ll suggest:
Fiction River’s How To Save The World
Last Tango In Cyberspace
Juniper Girls by Aaron Michael Ritchie
The Secret Life of Trees
and, always and forever, all of Terry Pratchett’s stuff

NA: And me, on the opposite end of the spectrum, has been reading only really dull business books lately. But some of my favorites include:
Good Omens by Gaiman and Pratchett
Odd and the Frost Giants by Neil Gaiman
Two Princesses of Bamarre by Gail Carson Levine (yes, I have Middle Grade faves because nostalgia)

Quick quiz!

Favourite thing to cook:
OW: Quesadillas!
NA: I hate cooking, but I’ll go with onigiri (rice balls) because I make them a lot and they’re so versatile.

Silliest saying:
OW: I stole my favorite cranky saying from Emma Bull’s War For The Oaks: ‘Well this sucks dead rat through a straw!’
NA: My entire life is one silly saying so I’m not sure how to pick!

Best holiday spot:
OW: My good friend Pink’s back yard on Beltane night
NA: Donegal County, Ireland

Most played song:
OW: Frenchy and the Punk’s ‘La Vie Boheme’
NA: F*cking Perfect by P!nk

With writing, are you a plotter or (seat-of-your) pantser?
OW: I’m a plotter. Our characters are not.
NA: I’m a pantser. Which made the beginning of our collaboration a little interesting.

Do you prefer to read SciFi or fantasy:
OW: I prefer to read. Period.
NA: I lean toward fantasy, but now and then I’ll crave a good scifi.

Best superpower:
OW: A redo button: let me go back 20 minutes in time and fix mistakes please.  Second in line is uncanny empathy. Please let me understand people and their actual motivations!
NA: Shapeshifting for me.

Number one thing to do on your bucket list:
OW: Go to the little town in Ireland my great grandfather came from.
NA: Dismantling the capitalistic patriarchal system. Short of that, finishing my half-sleeve tattoo, probably.

Narrator: Derek Shoales

Series: The Enigma Series, Book 5

Publisher: Enigma Series LLC

Released: Jun. 12, 2018

Length: 10 hours 59 minutes

Genre: Science Fiction; Technothriller

What is the result of combining unlimited computing power, a zealous desire to manipulate all but the elite humans, and a morally crippled mathematical genius? Unfettered anarchy! Can the ever-growing torrent of information, analyzed by sophisticated computer systems, neutralize freedoms of choice, then steer us into a predetermined destination?

Unidentified power mongers are plotting massive destabilization of the stock market, with the end game to not only optimize their wealth, but to also control the future. No need to cut a nervous investor off in traffic to initiate a stock market crash. All you need is unlimited computer power and the ethical nihilism to manipulate lives.

The R-Group, a high-level information gathering and security team, believes at least one group – possibly several – are using Big Data analysis to customize the future to their image. Jacob, Petra, EZ, Quip, and the rest of the R-Group battle along with Julie and Juan’s fledgling group of Cyber Assassin Technology Services teams to locate the source of the massive computing power required. Could these cyber schemers be as good at analyzing the information as the R-Group themselves?

Unless the R-Group can neutralize this unrelenting threat, humanity’s future will be determined by a select few. Are people unwittingly feeding an ever-growing tsunami of information into increasingly sophisticated computer systems? This begs the question: who controls whom?

Award-winning authors Breakfield and Burkey bring the fifth book in The Enigma Series, The Enigma Stolen, into the relevant world of Big Data and analytics. Can all the information available provide a reliable method of predicting the future? Who are the winners when humans are herded to a machine’s targeted end point?

Interview with Breakfield & Burkey – Part 2

Were there any real life inspirations behind your writing?
We both work in technology and have for many years. We bring our knowledge of technology into the stories along with our travel all over the world and the crazy good and bad people who have crossed our paths. Many of the characters are patterned off people we have known. One particular favorite is John C, an Irishman first appearing in The Enigma Wraith, who is a friend we worked with in technology for many years. Lots of fun people. By the way John C liked the Irish voice characterization our narrator did for his character.

How do you manage to avoid burn-out? What do you do to maintain your enthusiasm for writing?
We both work full time for very demanding companies. We set aside time for writing, marketing, and strategizing where to take the next book. Part of our continued enthusiasm for writing stems from the technology aspects we leverage in the stories. We are so lucky that technology is an ever changing element and we are close to the edge of the newest innovations and possibilities it can bring. While Book 10 is in its final grooming stages for publishing we are working on the concepts for the next story. Now and again we might get a bit down but then some idea will spark our conversation and the ideas will be everywhere.

Are you an audiobook listener? What about the audiobook format appeals to you?
This media is something Burkey is working with from a listening perspective. One of the best parts is the start, stop, and restart aspects. A different way of keeping your place. Ideal for long airplane rides.

Is there a particular part of this story that you feel is more resonating in the audiobook performance than in the book format?
As a reader you need to imagine the sentiment and feelings of the character in the context of the storyline. With the right narrator emphasizing the feelings of the characters in their tone it makes it somehow richer. We found in listening to our own stories during the review portions before they are finalized that we like our stories more than when we wrote them. That seems a little egotistical, but you asked.

If you had the power to time travel, would you use it? If yes, when and where would you go?
Time travel would be an ideal way to meet characters in the context of their life so sure. It is almost like name the top five people living or dead you would like to have as dinner guests. Likely we would enjoy going a bit into the future to verify that how we position technology adoption actually occurred or not.
But to your first question, no we wouldn’t use time travel because of the temptation to make changes to past events. We wouldn’t be the same people here at this point in time with changes to our past mistakes no matter how trivial they may seem.

What do you say to those who view listening to audiobooks as “cheating” or as inferior to “real reading”?
We try not to have a prejudice for the media type that people want to consume. Clearly it is a matter of preference, time, and these days age. People with different ideas often belittle others who take a different path. We think it is worth trying. When we are children listening to stories was our first exposure to reading.

How did you celebrate after finishing this novel?
To be honest, each novel completed allows for Chinese food or pizza and possibly a bit of sparkling wine. When book 10, The Enigma Source, is released in summer of 2018 in ebook and paperback it will be a fun discussion. When book 6, The Enigma Always, is released in audiobook format around that same time it will be its own celebration.

What gets you out of a writing slump? Stepping away or talking about the issue with my co-author typically helps move it along. Usually this occurs because our work interrupts the time we have for writing. Work is first as we have a responsibility to our jobs which we both take seriously. What about a reading slump? Neither of us have a good answer here as it hasn’t occurred to this point.

In your opinion, what are the pros and cons of writing a stand-alone novel vs. writing a series?
In a series the author gets to continue character development over time. Humans grow and change over time which is fun to explore. We also write short stories designed as standalone. In these it is more important to focus on your goals as an author for that story. As a series we get to withhold some story elements for a future member to our series. If you are only crafting a single standalone book our feeling is you need to “bake in” all the story elements needed to satisfy a reader.

Have any of your characters ever appeared in your dreams?
Yes. Sometimes it helps work out a way we want to take a character. Dreaming is a very useful tool.

What’s your favorite:
a. Food-We each have different favorite foods, though we both like Chinese, salads, and sweet potato fries. And of course, wine.
b. Song-There are so many great songs. We both enjoy rock ‘n’ roll so Queen, Led Zeppelin, and Pink Floyd are always high runners.
c. Book-War and Peace comes to mind as well as “Green Eggs and Ham”
d. Television show-Burkey doesn’t like TV shows. Breakfield is real fond of Game of Thrones
e. Movie-Burkey’s would be Live and Let Die. Breakfield’s would be The Wind and the Lion.
f. Band-Okay now we are back to Queen, Led Zeppelin, Pink Floyd and Steve Miller Blues Band
g. Sports team-Neither of us are really into sports, but agree the competition at the Olympics is great.
h. City-Burkey likes New York City. Breakfield likes Istanbul.

Are any of those things referenced in appearance in your work?
Our books have scenes or events which take place all over the world. We have each traveled extensively so the various cities like Istanbul, São Paulo, Barcelona, and New York City do appear. Wine and good food are also highlighted especially if there is a local food to highlight.

What bits of advice would you give to aspiring authors?
Write if you wish and enjoy what you write. It is always easier to write about things you know. You will not get it right the first time, but you need to keep at it. Don’t let your friends read it as they will only tell you what you want to hear. It is always better to try and fail, than to fail to try. Everyone has a story.

Do you have any tips for authors going through the process of turning their books into audiobooks?
Research is important. Take a look at various groups which take about the pros and cons of audiobooks. Invest wisely as it is an expensive endeavor. Many folks like to tell their own story which is great if you have a recording studio available and have a voice actor inside of you. Listen to a few books to help understand the voice you want to tell our story. ACX has some great tools. AudioBookReviewer.com is one avenue to look at. Richard Rieman (AudioBook Revolution) and Jocqueline M Protho (The Audio Flow Podcast). Another tip might be to read Richard’s book, The Authors Guide to Audio Book Creation.

What’s next for you?
We want to have the rest of the series, Books 6-10, in audio book format, and we are just starting to form the plans for Book 11.

Guest Post: The Enigma Wraith by Breakfield & Burkey

Author: Charles V Breakfield, Roxanne E Burkey

Narrator: Derek Shoales

Series: The Enigma Series, Book 4

Publisher: Enigma Series LLC

Released: Mar. 19, 2018

Length: 10 hours 50 minutes

Genre: Science Fiction; Technothriller

The Enigma Wraith, the fourth book in the Enigma series, serves up yet another captivating techno-thriller racing with romance, humor, and possible catastrophe. When an Irish financial institution, a Brazilian hydroelectric plant, a NATO base, and a smart car traveling through the European countryside are each hacked by the same sinister force, the world is introduced to the first glimpse of the potential damage that the Ghost Code can inflict – on both a personal and an industrial level.

Created by a mysterious pair of cyber pirates known only as Mephisto and Callisto, this destructive code is nearly impossible to find and even harder to remove. And while their agenda appears to be a blackmail plot for financial gain, their true aims could be of a far more menacing and expansive nature.

In an intriguing game of digital cat and mouse, the R-Group’s Jacob, Petra, and Quip find themselves pitted against their most nefarious enemies to date. Stretching their considerable talents to the max, they struggle to track down the source of the problem and craft a solution that can secure the world’s technology infrastructure before it completely collapses.

What do we risk in our appetite for technology with no guardrails in place?

Breakfield is a renowned technology solutions architect with 25+ years of experience in security, hybrid data/telecom environments, and unified communications enjoys leveraging his professional skills in these contemporary TechnoThriller stories. His love of World War II history from multiple viewpoints, extensive world travel, and cultural exchanges are a part of his DNA. Charles’ love of wine tastings, cooking, and Harley riding has found ways into the nine books of The Enigma Series. Being the son of a military father allowed early exposure to various outposts, which has positively contributed to Charles contributions to many characters and the various character perspectives explored.
Burkey is a renowned customer experience professional, she is adept at initiating business solutions optimizing existing technology architecture to positively impact business outcomes. Her 25+ years in technology and business has allowed her to be a featured speaker on customer experience, subject matter expert, interviewer, instructor, and author of technology documents, as well as creator of the award winning stories within The Enigma Series. She recognized a few years ago, after several white papers and non-fictional technology books that writing fiction is a lot more fun, creative, and yet leverages relevant technology. As a child she helped to lead the other kids with exciting new adventures built on make believe characters which she brings to the stories in a grown up manner. Rox enjoys family, listening to people, any kind of travel, sewing, gourmet cooking, and imagining the possibilities.
Breakfield & Burkey – Combining their professional expertise, knowledge of the world from both business and personal travels, many characters whom have crossed their paths and are now a foundation for the 150+ characters which are a part of their series. They find it interesting to use aspects of today’s technology that people are actually incorporate into their daily lives. They will openly claim this experience and knowledge of people is a perfect way to create these adult good guy/bad guy stories. Relevant technology is combined with travel, romance, intrigue, mystery, and humor design for each book to be enjoyed alone or in sequence. Reviewers have positively compared Breakfield and Burkey to the works of Tom Clancy and Clive Custer which are some of their influencers.
The nine books currently in the series include The Enigma Factor, Rising, Ignite, Wraith, Stolen, Always, Gamers, Broker, and Dragon have received awards individually as a series, and audio books. They have also created some award winning short stories including one for The Enigma Chronicles focused on how one of the founding family was fractured due to the greed for information superiority.

Guest Post: The Enigma Series by Breakfield & Burkey

Author: Charles V Breakfield, Roxanne E Burkey

Narrator: Derek Shoales

Series: The Enigma Series, Book 3

Publisher: Enigma Series LLC

Released: Dec. 18, 2017

Length: 10 hours 27 minutes

Genre: Science Fiction; Technothriller

As the world’s biggest powers compete for superiority, it’s not larger weapons or greater numbers of soldiers that top their wish lists. Instead, it’s the latest and greatest technological advances: nanotechnology, dynamic programming algorithms, and drones, working together to build the next generation of military communications.

When a professor at a Texas university begins researching ways to improve animal husbandry and boost global food supplies, her results catch the eye of inquisitive engineer Keith Austin Avery, whose interests have nothing to do with solving world hunger.

But as Avery works on potential new uses for this technology, his research draws the attention of a powerful terrorist group, with traumatic results for him and his subcontractor Eilla-Zan Marshall.

Now it’s up to the members of the R-Group to find the terrorists and their captives, using all the data and analytics at their disposal to leverage each and every piece of information.

The fast-paced third installment of the Enigma Series has R-Group’s Jacob working closely with a powerful and talented team, with results that incorporate a satisfying balance of technology, surprisingly sensitive romance, and the blurred lines that surround the age-old conflict between good and evil.

Breakfield is a renowned technology solutions architect with 25+ years of experience in security, hybrid data/telecom environments, and unified communications enjoys leveraging his professional skills in these contemporary TechnoThriller stories. Interview: The Enigma Series by Breakfield & Burkey

Author: Charles V Breakfield, Roxanne E Burkey

Narrator: Derek Shoales

Series: The Enigma Series, Book 2

Publisher: Enigma Series LLC

Released: Sep. 13, 2017

Length: 10 hours 19 minutes

Genre: Science Fiction; Technothriller

When a Brazilian industrialist hires the R-Group, the world’s most elite information-gathering unit to track the disappearance of his daughter – a dangerous – but quiet hunt begins. But just finding her doesn’t mean all will be well. The team in Switzerland follows the leads from South America to Mexico and the Caribbean, but the data trail is leading nowhere. Sometimes the most important clues come from unlikely sources.

By chance, two members of the elite team vacationing in Mexico cross paths with Carlos and Juan’s fly-by-night operation. Cloaking their “moving business” from satellite surveillance, their unique talent for relocating drug lords targeted by the Mexican authorities, along with their cash, gold, artwork and other assets, was legendary. These are Bad Boys, so-called entrepreneurs, whom even the most generous observer would question the legality of their business model.

Can the R-Group assemble the pieces of the puzzle without international consequences? Will the brothers stop running outside the law long enough to do the right thing? Can you hide from your past and still enjoy the present? Is the heiress hiding in plain sight or gone forever? And can the brothers rein in their contempt for societal rules and leave behind the sweet deals long enough to save a life?

The Enigma Rising continues the award-winning Breakfield and Burkey’s series, overcoming opportunistic cyber-crime in the high-stakes world of information brokering in the 21st century. With its strong cast of characters, this engaging techno-thriller of lost-and-found – and lost again – will take you on an incredible journey into the dark side of technology.

Q& A with Authors Breakfield & Burkey- Part One
  • Tell us about the process of turning your book into an audiobook.
    • When we decided to venture down the path of audiobook production it began as an information gathering activity. Neither of us had listened to audiobooks, but our kids were saying it was the easiest way to multitask. Then one of our friends indicated they were unable to read our stories they were ADAH and that we should record them. Burkey attended an author event and spoke to some folks about their offering of audiobook production, but the cost was so high we avoided for another year.
    • We had another friend who wanted to narrate our first book and tried, to produce several chapters. We really liked her interpretation, but she had not used a production facility. ACX tested the content and it sadly failed the needed sound quality levels.
    • Then we crossed paths with an expert in both narration and with creating audiobooks, Richard Rieman, who explained the process of finding a good narrator, the different ways to pay for the process, and approaches we might take. We listened to auditions and secured a renowned narrator, though we did not recognize that at the time. Again, we still had not listened to a full book via audible. The book was produced and over time we listened to our story being told one chapter at a time. We did not realize the finer points of how to secure changes, tools we should have provided, and the time it might take. It was a huge learning experience for us.
    • We had hoped we would be able to use the narrator for the subsequent stories, but we found ourselves at the cost prohibitive point. The ROI just did not work for us, so we had to find a new narrator. With book 6 currently in production, we are still learning how to help and support our narrator, Derek Shoales, who is doing a fabulous job of bringing our characters and stories to a new dimension.
  • Do you believe certain types of writing translate better into audiobook format?
    • Any writing can be translated into a great audiobook format with the right narrator, open discussion/exchanges between the authors and timely feedback. Only a picture book with no words would have an issue. Burkey has started to listen to audiobooks and her appreciation for the effort continues to grow.
  • Was a possible audiobook recording something you were conscious of while writing?
    • When we started writing and getting reviews we were hoping for the big screen with our series, like a Netflix, or Amazon series. We write about applied technology because it is what we know from our professional background. In answer to your question, we deliberately wrote each story with the idea in mind that we would port it to another media type.
  • How did you select your narrator?
    • We loaded up a sample of our story into ACX and solicited for narrators to essentially audition. We listened carefully to the way they told the story and selected the one we thought would bring the best voice to our series. When you have a character universe of 160+ like ours, it is important to make sure your voice actor can properly cover the range. This isn’t like reading to your young ones at bedtime but really a narrator who can become the character(s) and deliver an enriched story to the listener.
  • How closely did you work with your narrator before and during the recording process? Did you give them any pronunciation tips or special insight into the characters?
    • With the first book we did not work closely enough. We were still new to the process and changes which we would have liked seemed daunting. Without directions or author notes to guide, different narrators will deliver the work in their own ways.
    • After the first one we have started to provide pronunciations on words, insights to the characters, and locations as well as catching the time in a given recording where we would like a change. This has made the process into an amazing partnership. We feel like our narrator is part of our team.
    • You should know that not everything easily translates from the written word to a compelling audible. Derek caught a conversion problem when taking it to the audible format that we completely missed. Look for that skill in your narrator.

Narrator: Steven Jay Cohen

Series: The Enigma Series, Book 1

Publisher: Enigma Series LLC

Released: Jun. 9, 2017

Length: 12 hours 15 minutes

Genre: Science Fiction; Technothriller

Rogue cyber-criminals want Jacob Michaels, a brilliant young programmer, to join them. He just doesn’t know it yet. Jacob has the brains, expertise, and programming methods to get them what they want without discovery. With his best friend, Buzz, and a distractingly beautiful encryptionist in tow, Jacob enters the world of the Dark Internet here in the 21st century where the computer is the weapon of choice! With the cyber criminals engaged in international hacking, it’s easy to have your identity slip through your fingers. No one, including Jacob, believes it when he learns he has been targeted. Jacob finds the space between cyber good and cyber evil difficult to navigate as well as highly deadly.

Jacob has settled into a quiet routine of a techno geek after his mother dies. The plans he made are disrupted when he discovers his life is in danger. He sets off on a mission that takes him into new technology views and exposes to him the inner-workings of unknown global technologists. Jacob learns that safeguards for technology are always evolving and being exploited. His challenge becomes how to keep ahead of the criminals and identify who to trust.

Book one of The Enigma Series brings relevant technology elements of programming, encryption, crypto-currency, identity theft, and hacking to highlight the professional excellence of Jacob, more so perhaps due to his sheltered upbringing. Explore the horrific damage cyber criminals can inflict as the award-winning authors, Breakfield and Burkey, weave a complex tale of danger, intrigue, and international cyber combat in their debut thriller, The Enigma Factor.

This is a really slow book. Since it’s in the Thriller genre, I was expecting there to be more action and a much swifter pace. With that said, the over all premise is an interesting one. White Hat hackers unite! It takes over half the book to get to that point, but once it does, there is a bit of action and a set up for more action in the sequel.

Jacob Michaels is always so very, very polite. It takes a lot of dialogue to be that polite and considerate all the time. He’s faced with some tough truths that rise abruptly and smack him in the face and yet, he is still the polite, caring person. In his 30s, he’s never pursued a deep romantic relationship wanting to wait until he can afford a wife… but he says it in a more considerate way. This quaint mind set made me think of 1800s and even early 1900s where it was fairly common for men in their 40s to marry women half their age. So obviously Jacob has some deep seeded issues to work on.

His mom and granny were White Hats as well but unfortunately they are dead. I think having them alive and meddling would have made this story much more interesting. As it is, the ladies are nearly all romantic interests with a few other skills that we rarely get to see in action. Petra is the main love interest and is a skilled White Hat, though we are mostly told that and not shown. I think she’s in her 40s or older but that’s unclear. Julie is a flirtatious barista with hidden skills. Patty also has hidden skills but seems to be most proficient in inventive bedroom play. Haddy is married. Master Po, while currently celibate, used to enjoy oral sex and was proficient at it. As you can see, with nearly every female character, there is a bedroom scene. While the men get to be professional managers, hackers, bad guys, cops, spies, business men, etc.

At one point, Petra is thinking to herself how attracted she is to Jacob because of his aura of danger. So funny! Jacob hasn’t done anything dangerous at all at this point. He keeps in shape but he doesn’t have any hand to hand combat training nor any gun or knife proficiency. So, no danger here. Also, that was during the bike tour of the Long Island wineries. Petra has a motorcycle but she lacked the experience to carry a heavier passenger on the back seat, so she let Jacob drive. Argh! If Petra had a slew of other skills that we see used in this plot, that scene wouldn’t bother me so. With Petra relegated to Main Love Interest, it’s a let down. She’s been riding since her teen years but has never carried heavier people on the back seat…. It would have been so easy to give her this one skill and put it on display.

OK, so about halfway through this book we finally get a dead body. Yes! Let the action commence! The pace does pick up a little but it’s still pretty darn slow for a Thriller. I did really like how complicated things got for Buzz, Jacob’s best friend. He’s been taking it too easy, using Jacob to complete his own work tasks (Buzz’s coding skills aren’t all that). Now he’s in some hot water and he has to make some tough choices. I expect Book 2 will show us more of Buzz.

There are a ton of info dumps all the way through this book. Some are fun, cutting edge science or just plain science fiction and I enjoyed those. Like there’s some image encryption tech coupled with tattoos. Yes! That’s very interesting stuff and I wish we had more of it. There’s info dumps on China’s economics and how that relates to cyber security and also on the Enigma machine of WW2. Those were interesting if a bit long winded. Other info dumps were pretty pedestrian and only increased the word count to this novel. Honestly, I don’t really need to know how many pairs of socks Jacob packed to go to DefCon in Las Vegas.

For the most part, the characters stay the same throughout the story. I was expecting some character growth since there wasn’t much action going on. Perhaps the characters needed some action to force them to grow. Buzz showed the greatest growth and that was just a smidge. Some evil Russians (Sergei and Grigory) come in late in the book and give us some true, if one dimensional, villains to watch out for. I did feel for the white tiger Nikky.

All told, the book has promise but it’s long winded. 3/5 stars.

The Narration: Steven Jay Cohen does a pretty good job. He has distinct voices for all the characters and most of his female voices sound like ladies. I felt he struggled with some of the accents a little, some being a bit over accentuated. For the first few hours, Cohen kept putting a slight emphasis on an odd word in every other sentence. It wasn’t William Shatner level, but it was noticeable. After a while, this did smooth out and wasn’t noticeable very often. There’s no technical issues with this recording. 4/5 stars.

I received this audiobook as part of my participation in a blog tour with Audiobookworm Promotions. The tour is being sponsored by MK Marketing. The gifting of this audiobook did not affect my opinion of it.
