Folks, please welcome the talented Shamaan Casey back to the blog! He’s here to tell us a bit about himself and also to promote his latest audiobook narration, The Freedman by Lars D. H. Hedbor. It’s a great fit for Black History Month too! Scroll to the bottom for the info on the audiobook giveaway!

If you could be an extra on a TV show or movie, what would it be and what would you be doing?

I would be an extra in a Batman or Justice league animated TV show as a criminal or henchman. Why? They get to have all the fun!

A toy company makes a replica action figure of your likeness. What TWO (2) accessories do they include?

The first accessory would be a lightsaber (because I would totally have one if I could), and a bag of money, since that’s the closest I’ll ever be to having any.

If you owned a coffee house, what would you name it?

If I had a coffee house, I would name it Has Bean, or at least I would have if someone didn’t beat me to the punch!

If you could have a signed copy of any novel what would it be and why?

If I could have a signed copy of Batman: Hush (yeah its not written, but I consider it a graphic novel) that would be great, I remember picking up the collected story at the library and being drawn in with the incredible artwork, amazing story, and the debut of Hush, one of my favorite Batman villains of all time. That story is what brought me back into reading comics, so it will always have a special place in my heart.

The public library of your dreams has arrived! What special collections does it hold?

For me, the public library of my dreams would be a single library that collects every comic ever written. Besides the comics, it would also contain historical documents (early concepts, news paper clippings) and audio files of all comic related material, from the Captain Marvel and Superman radio show to the latest blockbuster movie. For me, its wonderful knowing the history and impact of characters we love, knowing what influenced their creation, the lesser-known parts of history (like Captain Marvel originally being more popular than Superman), and how the entertainment medium changed and reflected their respective time periods from the total war effort where every hero was fighting the Axis powers at some point to the comics code and all of the controversies and trials and game-changing moments (like the death of Gwen Stacy) that turned comic book characters into cultural and social icons.

If you couldn’t be a narrator, what would you chose to do?

If I couldn’t be a narrator, I would do cooking since I love to create things and baking and culinary has always drawn my attention.

You are stuck in space in dire straights. Which science fiction authors would you want with you?

I would probably pick H.G. Wells to be with me if I were stuck in space, purely on the fact that he is the only science fiction author whose name I can remember.

If you could go enjoy a meal in a fictional world, where would that be, and what would you eat?

I always remember being curious about the giant ribs in The Flintstones. Where did those ribs come from? How would they taste? If I could, I would totally try to learn the answer to that question.

You’ve lost the use of your vocal chords for a solid 30 days. How does this affect your life?

If I lost my vocal cords for 30 days, my life would certainly be turned upside down for a long time. My job ( I work in a restaurant, and I also work in food demos) are totally dependent on communication, and not being able to communicate verbally would become a liability that means I essentially can’t work. For audiobooks, I wouldn’t be able to work or audition (I would certainly have plenty of time on my hands to read though), so there wouldn’t be much to do on that front aside from tracking sales or researching topics. Essentially, my voice is my strongest asset, and I literally could not afford to lose for that long.

Finally, what upcoming events and works would you like to share with the readers?

My latest work, “The Freedman: Tales from a Revolution- North Carolina” is now available, so there’s no waiting for that one! It’s truly one of my favorite works thus far, and truly opened my eyes to the struggles of freed slaves and how the law itself was made in a way that left them at a disadvantage (read or listen to the book and you’ll know what I mean). I really gained an appreciation for Hedbor’s works, as they discuss the plights and viewpoints of people you wouldn’t otherwise consider, especially where the American Revolution is concerned. I have more work planned with both Lars D.H. Hedbor and Michael G. Thomas, and I’ll be improving my recording space to deliver an even better experience than before!

A Bit About Shamaan Casey

I’m a narrator who loves to bring new ideas and history to people, and always look for new opportunities to grow. I was born in 1996 and raised in Converse, TX. Growing up, I always watched a lot of animation, which gave me a deep appreciation for voice acting, which only grew as the years went on. While initially starting school for culinary arts, I finally yielded to all of the advice I had received over the years and finally embraced getting into the world of voice-over by making audiobooks. In only 3/4 of the year, I started with nothing and have now released 14 audiobooks, with more on the way. I love to watch theater and read engaging stories, often noting how much the voice of the character (be it spoken or in text) adds to the overall story and engages the audience.

Book Blurb on The Freedman by Lars D. H. Hedbor

What does liberty mean for a freedman?

Calabar was brought from Africa to North Carolina as a boy and sold on the docks as chattel property to a plantation owner. On the plantation, he learned the intricacies of indigo production, fell in love, and started a family.

Abruptly released from bondage, he must find his way in a society that has no place for him, but which is itself struggling with the threat of British domination. Reeling from personal griefs, and drawn into the chaos of the Revolution, Calabar knows that the wrong moves could cost him his freedom – and that of the nation.

The Freedman is Hedbor’s standalone novel set in North Carolina from his Tales From a Revolution series, in which he examines the American War of Independence as it unfolded in each of the colonies. If you like enthralling stories of familiar events from unfamiliar viewpoints, you’ll love The Freedman.
