Welcome everyone to the read along of Seanan McGuire’s A Local Habitation, Book 2 in the October Daye series. Anyone is welcome to join us over at our GoodReads Group! Check out the info at the end of the post.
This week’s hosted by Lynn’s Book Blog. We’re covering chapters 9-16 below, so beware of spoilers if you have not read that far. I’m doing the audiobook version (which is awesome) but I apologize now for any misspellings of names and such.
1. ALH is a very odd place – what do you make of it so far and it’s inhabitants? It has a different feel to the last book doesn’t it?
It reminds of the warren of old buildings that had interior walls gutted or put up and then cubicle walls moved around on a regular basis – and all that gives me a feeling of age to it. On the other hand, we know that ALH is pretty new and we’re dealing with all this new tech. It’s an interesting mashup.
2. There is certainly a lot going on at ALH – different dynamics, what are your feelings on the people you’ve met? Anything at all about those remaining and those who have died?
It is definitely a motley crew. So Alex and his sister are starting to fascinate me. For instance, we haven’t seen them together and Alex seemed cagey about that. And then Alex has this almost lustful appeal to Toby while his sister does the same for Quentin. So I am starting to wonder if Alex and his sister are one and the same being and they change appearances as day becomes night, etc. Not sure yet how that will work.
So far, I don’t see what separates the ‘dead’ from the living. We just learned that Barbara was a spy (not fully confirmed) and perhaps she got to close to uncovering something that someone didn’t want uncovered. Yet we don’t have any reason to suspect the other dead for having been snooping into things.
3. The phone call with Tybalt: I was curious about his comment about Riordan and what do you think he intends to do next? We’re learning a little bit more about the Cat Sidhe – what do you think Tybalt’s next move will be?
I think Tybalt has sent the kitties to ALH to keep an eye on things while he finds a way to quietly set himself up there. I think Toby is going to need the help. Knowing Tybalt, he will wait to an appropriately dramatic moment to insert himself into the affair. 😉
4. Barbara – what do you make of the new evidence that has come to light with her dealings with the Duchess of Dreamer’s Glass? What is she up to?
So we had a pile of records but also an uncashed check. So I have to wonder if Barbara was spying reluctantly or under duress for the Duchess. Perhaps Barbara started off doing so willingly but then got to know the people and decided friendship was more important. Anyway, I think there’s more here.
5. It looks like Toby is going to try and summon the Night Haunts? Any thoughts on how this will go and speculation about the Night Haunts?
I really don’t know how she will summon them. If she could be near some fae that dies, then she could wait for them. I don’t suppose there are small fae cockroaches that she can kill and wait for them? And then communicating with the Night Haunts… hmmm. This could be a tough one. Perhaps she will ask the Liadegh (spelling?) and get her wisdom (at a price) on the matter.
6. Any guesses so far as to what’s going on?
Nope. It’s pretty complex and it appears that everyone has secrets and I bet many of those secrets don’t really matter in regard to the deaths but Toby has to sort them all out anyways.
Quentin’s first car accident! I was really worried there for a moment that he was dead.
I doubt that Tybalt likes canned tuna.
Gordon has a lot of grump going on, but also seems to have a lot of info. And who has told folks that Toby and Alex were kissing?
