About Wolgast Castle

BrightonWolgastCastleForced to attend Princess Maria regent’s celebration at Wolgast Castle, 1560 Germany, Sidonia von Bork, fears her magical abilities will be discovered and she’ll be burned alive as a witch. When she discovers she is actually a member of an ancient shape-shifting race and the prophesied Golden One, she must face her destiny: to save the multiverse from the daemons determined to destroy all humans, and stay alive in the process.

Listening to Your Muse

The Greeks had it right, I think. The Muse is the source of knowledge.

Or at least the source of writing ideas. Oh how Muse can torture with wispy, half-formed ghosts that might be something reason can build into a story.

Partway, Muse shuts up and refuses to give even those tidbits. Do you have writer’s block?

No! Muse is mad because reason is being paid attention to and you’re not paying attention to her.

So, how do you listen to your Muse? Some ways are easier than others.

As you drift off to sleep (reason is inactive), bring up a scene Muse gave you and ask for more. Watch the scene roll out in a five-senses movie! And Muse keeps talking to you all night (some say she takes you to the place of your story). You wake with a fuller confidence in “your” creation.

But more than everything else, silence (aka meditation) helps. This is a not-as-easy way. But there are easier ways than sitting on a mat in a lotus potion.

Henry David Thoreau discovered walking is a great way when he lived at Walden Pond. I can hear you yelling, “I don’t live alone in a nice peaceful place!”

But you do. It’s inside you. Do you have a treadmill? Or anywhere you can walk? Google “Walking meditation.”

Or do you have a little space to do yoga? (There are gentle types.)

Don’t have time for any of that? Try simply paying attention to your breath. If a thought comes in, let it go out without paying any attention to it. Doing this in a traffic jam or other stressful times does double duty.

What exactly happens? Your concentration improves. You get a sense of well-being. But more important to us creative ones, your ideas flow freer. Muse has some breathing room. She whispers to you, not merely half-formed ideas, but entire books, characters, and marketing. Listen to your Muse.

About Linda Bell Brighton

BrightonLindaBellAuthor pictureLinda Bell Brighton fell in love with myths, magic, and monsters at an early age. On a thunder-storming day in the Keys, her father—in his bass reading voice—brought The Hound of the Baskerville to too-vivid-life. From that day forward, Greek and Roman myths merged with Wonder Woman and Super girl. After studying medieval and Renaissance literature in college, she now combines her loves by writing an alternate history of the Witch Burning Times that she calls magpunk: real history with myths, magic, monsters—and daemons, too.
